Liverpool are reportedly willing to accept £15million for Joel Matip, with the defender’s contract running down.
That the Reds haven’t lived up to the standard’s they’ve set for themselves of late has been evident this season. Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently 10th in the league and more than 10 points outside the top four.
Of the 20 games they’ve played in the league so far they’ve lost seven. Indeed, a lot of their more reliable assets from the last few seasons have not been up to standard this season.
As such, it seems they would certainly benefit from a rebuild. That will mean both letting some players go and bringing some new talent to the club.
Klopp is seemingly ready to let go of one of his more trusted players in recent seasons in order to do that.
Football Insider reports Liverpool are ready to see the back of centre-back Matip. The report suggests they are ‘willing to accept an offer of £15million this summer.’
The defender has played more than 180 games in all competitions for the Reds. Indeed, he has formed a solid partnership with Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the defence.
That was active in both the Reds’ 2018/19 Champions League triumph and their 2019/20 Premier League triumph.
However, injuries have meant that partnership has been split up this season. Matip has played just nine league games this term and has not been able to reach the heights he has previously been at.
With the 32-year-old’s contract ticking down, it seems now is the right time for club to see the back of him. Liverpool will guarantee they make a decent fee if they do manage to sell up this summer.
Suitors for the defender will likely not be too hard to find. While his standards are slipping for a side who should be challenging at the top of the best leagues in the world, that’s not to say he wouldn’t perform in a team a little bit further down the table, or perhaps in another league.
Selling up would also allow the Reds to recruit a younger player who, they will hope, can make that spot his own for years to come.
